As imposing as they are, banning trucks from Victoria Bridge is not the answer to ensuring the safety of pedestrians and motorists. Even without trucks, cars would still present an unacceptable risk to pedestrians.
The bridge is an important piece of local infrastructure. Banning trucks will just force them to use the M4 and add to the congestion of Mulgoa Rd.
Construction of a dedicated pedestrian and cycle way will not only ensure the safety of walkers, but will free around 1m which can be used to widen traffic lanes for vehicles.
Great work! It’s a surprising this issue isn’t more prevalent within the municipality. I’ve often wondered why there isn’t at the very least a safety rail to separate pedestrians from traffic, but I suppose this will have little protection if one finds themselves in the path of an out of control vehicle careering towards them. These days, I only use the bridge as a motorist, however in my youth I crossed the bridge many times on foot and it is an incredibly daunting (and loud) walk in which you feel extremely vulnerable and exposed. I definately believe a separate pedestrian bridge is imperative to the safety and interests of the public. I also believe the heritage of the bridge needs to be protected, but not at the risk of someone’s life. It’s one thing to preserve an areas history, but when the views and inaction of those with control mirror a different kind of antiquity, innocent people are bound to get hurt.
