It looks good but surely a pedestrian bridge off the existing bridge would be much more cost effective. The afternoon peak hour bottlenecks at Victoria Bridge would cease if a 2 lane vehicular bridge was erected adjoining the existing bridge. A pedestrian walkway could easily be incorporated into the design. It would save the rate payers of Penrith millions of dollars and would beneficial ALL Penrith rate payers and visitors to the city.
Now is the time to impliment the new road bridge as council would need to acquire land from the Log Cabin site. Right now its sitting there waiting to be acquired.. free of structural improvements. In another 24 months it could be a different story

I must express my disgust at the lack of action taken by the Penrith City Council and the RTA to ensure the safety of pedestrians on the Victoria Bridge.
The weekend just passing, my partner and i were riding along the Victoria Bridge before we saw an oncoming pedestrian on the foot path. We dismounted from our bikes. The lady was pushing her bike with a kid in the bike seat. There was literally cm’s of room between us and the car’s while we made pass each other. My partner then mounted her bike on the footpath (while i watched) only to lose her balance and fall onto the road while traffic was approaching. Thank god, the car’s were far enough away to slow down while she moved back to the footpath. I cannot even begin to think had the car’s been closer, had it been a truck, had the car’s been speeding at the disaster that could of possibly occurred.
Penrith City Council and RTA where is your brains? The footpath is extremely dangerous for pedestrians to travel over.
In the interim while the new path for the pedestrians is been decided/designed or constructed, preventative action should be taken to increase safety of this bridge.
Some ideas:
1) The footpath should be closed. This is harsh decision for the community, but better than seeing some one lose life.
2) If the footpath is to remain open, the speed prior to approaching the bridge should be reduced to 40KM/h along with multiple signs indicating that the bridge is shared with pedestrians. Police should regularly enforce speed limit.
There is absolutely no room for error on this footpath. What will it take to get the councils/RTA attention. Will it take the death of a child, an adult? What? That’s what it sure seems like…
Do something about it. Not tomorrow, today.

Sure there is a problem with the bridge but there comes a time when you have to assess the situation and use your own common sense. You should dismount your bike and push it from one end to the other. Its obvious there is a problem with passing pedestrian traffic. Why risk it?
It has been over 25 years since I rode across Victoria Bridge. When I grew up in Emu Heights I would ride on the road with the traffic as it was far too dangerous back then to be trying to share a narrow path with pedestrians. With the additional traffic on the road and pedestrians on the path I can only imagine how dangerous this is now. Come on let’s get this walk way constructed.
I walk the Bay Run and the Nepean River every weekend
The improvement having the new bridge at Iron Cove is remarkable
Like Nepean the pathway at Iron Cove was very narrow, crowded and extremely noisy but at least it had a railing to stop you falling into the roadway
Now the walk over the bridge is great very quiet loads of room and a lovely veiw
Why can’t we have the same experience at Victoria Bridge?
I hate crossing the Victoria Bridge the noise is dreadful and it is quite scary
I am from Dubbo in NSW, and I am disgusted about the safety conditions of the pedestrians in such a built up center as Penrith. I went for a jog yesterday with my work colleague and we had to stop our run and turn back because we felt unsafe due to all the traffic, and the lack of room to cross the bridge. I will not let my two children cross this bridge until a suitable crossing is added.
The bridge to bridge loop is the perfect location and distance for a bike ride with the kids but there is no way I would let them ride across Victoria Bridge, it’s just too dangerous!!
A pedestrian/cycle lane separated from the roadway would provide a safe crossing for walkers and riders as well as the ability to widen the traffic lanes. It would also provide beautiful river views and improve the asthetics of the bridge, if done well.
Arguments such as heritage value really don’t stand up after the sandstone pylons were hacked by Sydney Water when they put the pipe between the road and rail bridges.
What will t take for someone to do something about this problem? I have liked in emu plains my whole life and love doing the river walk, but i have a baby on the way and i wont walk across that bridge with a pram, its not safe!
also the traffic going to and from penrith over the bridge is ridiculous!!!

There needs to be action taken to upgrade the bridge, I have had whilst crossing the bridge on my bike hoons actually hang out of their car at the last possible moment when approaching me,yell and throw an object at me I assume to throw me off my bike! Apart from being stupid if they had succeeded I could have fallen into the path of on-coming cars. This a great idea Mr Mullins and well done, hopefully something willl be done.
One day they’ll build a new bridge that can safely accommodate pedestrians and cyclists.
Until then, the only satisfactory solution is to install a safety barrier adjacent to the path.
The road lanes would be a little bit narrower, so they’d need to reduce the speed limit (which is currently too high for the conditions anyway).
The 250 metre journey over the bridge takes 15 seconds at 60 km/h. At 40 km/h it would take 22.5 seconds. Would that extra 7.5 seconds hurt anyone?
As a resident of River Rd & a cyclist & jogger I use the Victoria Bridge most days.The bridge footpath is dangerous & totally inadequate .Council need to stop announcing a “study ” on the bridge every few years & get on with getting it fixed.
Its no fun having truck mirrors miss your head by inches while you are simply walking across a footpath.We are voters & ratepayers,council need to get a lot more pro active.
The basic safety considerations are serious enough. I am an old codger who wears hearing aids, and don’t like really noisy environments. The one time I walked across Victoria Bridge, it was so noisy I turned my hearing aids off! Not really a good idea as it reduces your safety, but the enclosing metal walls made it so noisy with all the traffic that I couldn’t cope otherwise. Let’s at least move into the twentieth century with something a little less daunting!
I am completely in agreement with Alison Taite Aug 27 (this blog) who decries the graffiti nitwits that disfigure the beautiful masonry structures in our community but what about Sydney Water? Within the last few years they have hacked into the sandstone piers of Victoria bridge to instal a steel support system for their water main. (constructed between the road and the rail bridge). Before such acts of vandalism are committed, the community needs to be informed and a public conversation initiated with a view to coming up with alternative ideas. I don’t recall Council jumping up and down about this at the time.
Yes I do think that the bridge is unsafe to walk across I have walked across the bridge and you feel as if you are going to get hit buy passing traffic it is very unsafe to walk across the bridge.
There are ways around fixing the problem by putting a walkway on the left hand side of the bridge behind the steel wall on the Ladbury Ave side of the road.
That would be safer than where people are walking now.
I have lived on River Road Leonay for 30 years. When I built here we were promised that work was to be carried out on Victoria Bridge SHORTLY! We are still waiting… I used to walk my Border Collie over the bridge and she was as scared as I was, I do not walk that way anymore, it is just to dangerous. Action instead of hot air is what is neeeded NOW – but as a pessimist – I will believe it when I see it. (Hopefully I will still be around to see it in my lifetime.)
If a site for a new bridge upstream of Vic. bridge (designed with community involvement) is leased to a builder/developer for a nominal sum, it could carry two westbound lanes of traffic PLUS a row of shops/public space/Q Theatre annex/footway /? stretching right across the bridge with views upriver and protected adequately from traffic. The existing bridge footway could be strengthened and incorporated into a wider eastbound carriageway. The bridgebuilder gets to charge rental of the commercial premises for 30 years. Problem solved with no cost to the community. The only difficulty will be to get the idea past council!
As the Local SES Controller from 1974 till 2001 and a Mobile Mechanic over a number of years I used the Victoria Bridge on many occassions,in some cases driving a large pantech type truck and always had a concern with 1/ the lack of clearance for
vehicles when passing2/ the narrowness of the footpath when pedestrains and cyclists passed one another
I would have thought that the problem had been rectified by now. I moved from Penrith in 2004 but still have family in the area.
Try walking under the railway bridge on Russell Street that is horrific with the huge trucks coming at you. No footpaths there. Why should we have to put up with this in the 21st century. It wouldn’t happen in the inner suburbs of Sydney.

Victoria bridge is dangerous for adults and children. I am reluctant to cross the bridge on foot with my children therefore, I drive my car. It is so narrow and so close to on coming traffic, it is a death trap just waiting for a child to fall onto the roadway. I have had a few near misses on the bridge whilst pushing a pram, with trucks coming so close they nearly knock you off your feet. The traffic on Victoria bridge is very heavy and the speed limit is 60km, it should be reduced to 40km NOW.
This is typical of the “car culture” mindset. Pedestrians and cyclists don’t have powerful lobbyists to hassle the government, so they get lip service at best.
Car manufacturers, oil companies, smash repairs, road and bridge builders; you name it, there is an immense coalition of vested interests that wants to see you and me behind the wheel of a motor car. There’s no money in pedestrians and cyclists, and it shows in places like the Victoria Bridge.
But they can’t argue with this one – the need is too strong to ignore, even by weak-kneed politicians. But we must be assertive to be heard.
A proper review of pedestrian and cyclist safety on this bridge is long overdue
I believe in ‘shutting the gate before the horse bolts’. Fix the problem before someone gets killed. Placatory words from politicians do not bring back lost lives and only serve to make a jaded public more cynical and angry. Last time I walked across the bridge I counted close to 100 vehicles pass me. Walking from Penrith to Emu, the traffic closest to me was coming from behind, hence I would not have been able to take evasive action if it was needed. The bridge was built for the days of little traffic and is totally inadequate for today’s needs.
I will also add that the undersides of the road bridge and the rail bridge are magnificent works of masonry and it is a sad indictment on some in today’s society who feel that despoiling it with graffiti is their right. The masons who built these bridges were highly skilled artisans and their work is worthy of respect forever.
Several years ago my closest friend was tragically killed after being hit by a car whilst jogging. It was a devastating experience that has altered the path of my own life; not to mention the effect that it has had on his family. It is not an experience that i would wish anyone to ever endure. What i would give to get him back and to have prevented that accident?
Victoria Bridge is an accident waiting to happen. There will be no satisfaction in having a death be the catalyst for a solution. Make the bridge safe immediately. Once the damage has been done – you cannot go back.

Council seem to be struggling with a solution.So much so they have decided to duplicate the problem for 3km down River Rd.Combined cycleway/pedestrian path right next to the ever increasingly busy rd.”Oh”there will be a safety fence to stop them riding down the bank into the other pedestrians & cyclists on the lower level track.Nothing to stop them riding in front of vehicles.3km of green fence covered in tags should look good.If they can’t sort the bridge they shouldn’t be let loose on the river bank.
Remember the recent bi-election? Both Stuart Ayres & John Thain were carrying on about how they are going to fix Victoria Bridge to make it safe for pedestrians, cyclists & motorists. Well, it appears nothing has been done. I have lived here all my life & commute across the bridge everyday either on a bicycle or in a car, with the increasing traffic & trucks from the quarry something will happen & it will happen soon! Something needs to be done. Just fix the Bloody Bridge!!!!!
Why can’t a safety rail be installed as an interim measure, there is room for sure. also place a 40 km/h speed limit.
There arre plenty of comments pointing out the dangers of the bridge so I will not add to those. Realising that it will be some time before anything structural will be done, perhaps in the short term, a substantial handrail could be put in place separating pedestrians and riders from traffic and a weight limit being put on the bridge restricting it’s use by trucks and buses. I realise that this would no be appreciated by some drivers, however, safety should be the first consideration.
I have been hit by a car as a pedestrian once before and never want to experience this again. The Victoria bridge poses a serious problem to our community. I often walk the bridge to bridge loop. I despise running and never partake in this activity except for when I cross the Victoria Bridge. The fear of a car or truck mounting the footpath forces me to actually run across the bridge – not something I enjoy. My 3 children are not permitted to ride or wheel their bicycles along this bridge because of the safety concerns. Please address this important safety issue now before a catastrophe occurs.
I suggested to create a toll for charging cyclist in using the bridge. It is time for them to be responsible for the cost of the THEIR cycling path. They have been using the roads for grant for too long the time. To ensure the safety of others, they should have something similar to green slip to ensure that their bicycles are well maintained. I encourage RTA to start taking registration of bicycles, handing out number plane and issuing slip papers.
I feel for you Antonio, but do not agree. It appears to me that you may have an issue with cyclists – what happenned, did you have a spill and prefer the couch from the age of 10 or just your fat ar#e don’t fit on a buke seat. What about the kids who want a safe passage across the bridge? Check out how hard it is for two oncoming strollers to go past each other, especially so if a bus or truck is driving by at the same time! Shame on your rant.
I have lived in the sutherland shire and there is no way the council in that area would let this happen.
We all pay rates, whoever has the power to build a safer passage should do so. As far as I can see it’s OHS issue.
Cycleways are more than marking out a bit of footpath and calling it a cycleway. High time there was something done to give some material improvement for the cyclists, joggers and walkers. Adults and kids alike are at risk of toppling onto the road when trying to pass another cyclist or pedestrian on the bridge. This is a serious omission in the cycle path planning given the money already spent on the cycleway adjacent to the river. Time to tackle the hard problems.
Long overdue! I avoid crossing this bridge at all times. Don’t let a fatality be the tipping point towards the construction of a safe alternative for pedestrians and cyclists, many of whom are our treasured children and youth. Politicians take note. This is a red flag in the consciousness of the Penrith community. Spare no time and cost and start investigating possibilities immediately. I propose a march across the bridge – led by the organisers – to alert those in power to the seriousness of the situation.
As a recreational cyclist living on the west side of the nepean, this bridge is one of the few routes to cross the river. A safer alternative to the footpath and narrow road lanes is needed. For younger cyclists, the risk is far greater with loss of concentration and tragic consequences more likely. Mitchell’s Pass road has been closed recently due to risk of landfall, after being open for many years. With the level of pedestrian, cyclist and road traffic on the Victoria Bridge each day, do local council think the risk of incident is any less than Mitchell’s Pass ? Instead of investing council budget in non essential infrastructure, prioritise the safety of the local community and act to prevent the accident rather than after it happens.
You can not blame anyone as you have decided to take the risk by choosing this route. You are not forced to cross the bridge, aren’t you? Or you can organise a fundraising to fund the modification of the bridge. In fact the simple fix is to close either the pedestrian path or the traffic.
Thank goodness there are others who feel the same way I do regarding the bridge. My 15 year old will not use it as it’s too close to the traffic. This is largely an Emu-plains, leonay, emu-heights issue. Can I ask all residents (especially those with primay school age & younger children – one day your child will want to cross that bridge to go to the movies in penrith etc) to get behind those proposing a separate pedestrian/cycle bridge on the south side. And to encourage a structure to be built for the future, and not to be negative about the amount of money such a project would demand. How about a bridge with a few seats in the centre, for those who want to rest for a few minutes & take in the beauty as they look southward. Am I being too frivilous?
This needs to be fixed. The bridge to bridge walk is a beautiful display of the best parts of the Penrith area and should be a social occasion that everyone can enjoy in safety whilst getting some exercise in safety..
As a daily user of this bridge and having driven cars, buses, mototcycles and bicycles as well as walking across the bridge, I believe something needs to be done to improve the pedestrian safety aspect. However, the statistical data relating to incidents occurring on this bridge does not justify the degree of publicity currently leveraged.
The ideal solution would be to build a duplicate bridge on the southern side of the existing bridge allowing for the existing bridge to become two eastbound lanes and the new bridge two westbound lanes. Certainly the road infrastructure is already in place on either side of the river to incorporate four lanes of traffic. Incorporated into the new westbound bridge should be a seperate walk/cycle way allowing views of the river upstream.
Of course we all know that this will not happen because the incident statistics previously mentioned do not justify altering the bridge or spending the necessary capital to make the bridge safer for all users.
The wonderful Nepean River and surrounding district of Penrtih is enhanced with beautiful Picnic areas , great walk and cycle ways which all add to the natural beauty of the Nepean River. But crossing the Victoria Bridge is taking your life into your own hands it is very scary. Surely to put a pedestrian and cycle lane across the bridge, should not be rocket science.
Oh we so need something safer than what we have now. I was doing the Bridge-to-Bridge one day and felt really dizzy while crossing the bridge. I almost fell into the traffic. I’m nervous every time I walk across.
Twenty five years ago I was nearly wiped out on this bridge by a truck whilst jogging the bridge to bridge circuit when a medium sized truck/van did mount the curb for a moment. The driver responded quickly, thankfully, as I literally dived forward out of the way scraping only my knees and arms on the pavement after bouncing off the iron railing. Then and now however I knew it was an extremely lucky occurence; half a second’s attention making all the difference. This action by the community is long overdue so let’s hope our political representatives won’t continue to tempt fate. NSW governments have wasted a criminal amount of time and money on planning and managing our infrastructure over the last two decades. Let’s hope they can respond efficiently and sensibly to, what seems to anyone who has ever crossed that bridge on foot, an open and shut case. Moreover why not do more to beautify and highlight our lovely river , for the Nepean is Penrith’s most attractive asset. Can anyone else imagine a suspended walkway like those which span the Thames or Brisbane’s central river?

It is about time!! As a regular user of the bridge to bridge walk I hate the pedestrian path on the Victoria bridge and pray for safety every time I use it. It is dangerous and really needs to be changed. If there are multiple people trying to pass each other on that footpath it can get very scary.
Great initiative! Works to the bridge should have been done years ago. I never feel safe myself when I am walking across the bridge, so there is no way I will take my children for a walk or bike ride around the river due to the footpath on Victoria Bridge being so narrow and dangerous.
I am so pleased there may finally be some action regarding this bridge, it connects 2 absolutely beautiful walking/running paths in Penrith – sadly so many people will not take advantage of this simply because walking or running over Victoria bridge is just too dangerous.
